A sterling silver money clip with stamped alligator skin detail. This rare and quality piece was made in America by Tiffany & Co. The use of alligator print in metal goes back to Victorian times in Europe, but can be traced back even further in other cultures. The alligator was both revered and feared, with its very distinctive scaled pattern conveying a number of emotions to cultures across the globe.
The pattern became a symbol of luxury in the West as wealthy people began to venture on 'World Tours', making luggage and luxurious accessories from spoils of the hunt. This is why Tiffany decided to introduce this pattern into their line.
The money clip is made by the luxury retailer and manufacturer Tiffany & Co. It is signed "Tiffany & co." "Makers" and Sterling" stacked along the bottom rear of the clip. Circa 1970's, this is a fantastic piece, it has been used, and has signs of light scratches, but the clip itself is still tight and in perfect working condition.
